Law Enforcement Students Spar at Dojo
February 16, 2017
Law Enforcement is a very demanding profession. There may be a time where words and crafty verbiage just won’t put handcuffs on an offender.
This may result in an officer having to go “hands-on” with someone. This is why we condition, practice various martial arts, and then put it together in a light sparring environment.
Students are given very strict guidelines about sparring and have necessary safety gear. In this class of 37 students, 20 were eligible to go to the Dojo (the martial arts center in Sandwich) and spar. After a quick 30 minute cardio workout, they paired up and began to spar. They sparred for about 40 minutes, changing partners with minute breaks every now and then. By the time the class was over, there were only 8 remaining. Students ‘bowed’ out for various reasons, but no one sat out due to an injury or being hurt. Lack of proper nutrition and healthy eating put most of them on the bench. I guess I will be doing a lesson on nutrition later this month.
