An Argument for Coding & Engineering in High Schools
We all know that skills like coding and engineering are the future. So much so that parents actively seek after-school and even summer camp programs geared toward helping their children learn these skills. Forbes has called coding the blue collar job of the future. With automation and green energy ever on the rise, we cannot assume that the traditional “backup jobs” that give us financial safety will be available for our children. Even college graduates are having difficulty finding a meaningful stream of income, let alone a career in their chosen field.
So how can we better buffer our students/children to the harsh transitions of our current job market? I argue that we teach them the skills the job market is in demand of now and in the future. Now more than ever, we need to teach our students the basis of coding structure and engineering principles before they are thrown into a job market that demands them.
