Who doesn’t love a good burger? Is your favorite a grilled classic topped with American cheese or a stacked specialty burger with ingredients piled high?

The Culinary Arts students were asked to bring their best burger creations to the table to kick off the school year at IVVC. Students faced a double elimination challenge to earn spots on the 2017-2018 Competition Team.

Competitors first had to create a detailed kitchen plan for their burger. They were then given one hour to prep, cook, plate, and present to a panel of judges.

Scores were based on Safety and Sanitation, Presentation and Professionalism, and finally the burger’s overall eye appeal and flavor. Each and every student presented wonderfully flavorful and well cooked burgers.

With such a competitive field it was hard to narrow the field, but our dedicated judges choose 15 students to pass into the second round of elimination:

Jayci P.                       2nd year Indian Creek

Ashley B.                    1st year Indian Creek

Brie P.                         1st year Plano

Chloe M.                     1st year Plano

Stephen C.                  2nd year H.B.R.

Zeta B.                        2nd year Sandwich

Abby G.                       1st year Sandwich

Josh M.                       2nd year Sandwich

Tori M.                         2nd year Sandwich

Jonathan P.                 2nd year Sandwich

Faith W.                       1st year Sandwich

Jacob S.                      2nd year Sandwich

Katie C.                       1st year Sandwich

Jordan P.                     2nd year Sandwich

Krista P.                       2nd year Somonauk

The final knock-out round required students to work in teams of two. This time they had to prepare two identical burgers with a side within one hour. Each and every team was focused and performed at the top of their game. Judges were blown away by the creativity and detailed food that was produced in such a short period of time.

In the end there could only be six finalists. After hours of deliberation the culinary class received their results. Jayci P., Brui P., Josh M., Tori M., Zeta B. and Jacob S. will have the chance to compete for the title of “ VALEES Culinary Team of The Year”. These regional finals will be hosted by Joliet Junior College on Oct. 27.

Thank you to all of our students for their hard and delicious work!!
