Original race car hobby kit

This week in PLTW, each student received a hobby model kit of either a race car, helicopter, sailboat, or airplane from the dollar store. The goal of this assignment is to take that kit and improve the design of it so a customer would pay two dollars for the kit.

First, we had to document all of the parts, their dimensions and how the kit is assembled in our engineering notebooks. From there we modeled all of the documented parts using 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software. After each individual part is modeled, we assemble all parts to make a virtual model of the hobby kit. Next, we start to modify the original parts to improve the look and design of the kit.

I asked some of my classmates what their favorite part of the project was and they said they liked modeling it in the 3D modeling software and physically putting their kit together. Personally, my favorite part was definitely modeling the parts and assembling them in Inventor. Pictured is an example of the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of the project.
