In such a society we live in today, the arts have been forced to take a back seat in the whirlwind of everything else. Opportunities for the arts are scarce, especially in small communities in rural Illinois. Sure, I have arts classes at my home school, but that’s only an hour to 70 minutes, if I’m lucky. As an artist, the time spent towards my art is valuable.

The Graphic Design program at IVVC offers just that for me. Having a knack for art isn’t required, but certainly assists in an enjoyable experience! The environment the classroom offers is encouraging in doing the best possible work, and the pieces that are put out only boast passionate artists. Artists are naturally drawn to artists, and enjoy the company of other artists. The graphics room is certainly an artistic environment, constantly flowing with creativity and encouraging words.

As a second year student, I’ve had much experience in the classroom. Walking in as a first year, I didn’t know what to expect. It had been 2 years since I’d visited IVVC as an 8th grader, and I was obviously determined since then. I walked in, and was given a warm greeting and immediately felt welcome. The students who were seated next to me were second years and they promptly assured me it would be a great year. And sure enough, my junior year of high school was my best year, thanks to IVVC’s Graphic Design program. I met so many amazing and wonderful people I am happy to call my friends, and experienced amazing opportunities I wouldn’t have had without IVVC.

I was able to understand and experience the world of graphics in the comfort of the classroom, gaining valuable skills and knowledge I have carried out into my personal life. Being now a second year, I have new things to learn, such as becoming a functioning adult in society, and graphics has not let me down. I am given real jobs making logos or t-shirt designs for real clients, giving me valuable hands-on experience with the latest Adobe software, photography material, and vinyl cutting and printing. All while still being among people I laugh with and enjoy being around.

Joining the IVVC Graphic Design program is likely the best decision I’ve made. Each day in school, I count down the hours until I can spend the remainder of my day in the graphics classroom. And once I’m there, it’s hard to say I’d want to leave, and I will certainly miss my days in graphics once I graduate. I value all the knowledge I have been given, as well as skill, experience, and friends that I won’t forget.
