What it means to be a Graphics Student

The question at hand is “What does it mean to be a graphics student?”. But you can rephrase that to be much more than just that one simple question. To be a student at the Indian Valley Vocational Center in the Graphic Design class is to be creative.

Whether you’re a first-year student starting out, with either some prior knowledge or not, or you’re a second-year student returning to refine & improve on the skills you had learned the year prior, this class accepts any type of creative mind. You could be creative in the way that you like to draw. You could be creative in the way you like to paint. Whichever one you are can help you in the long run.

You can also be in this class to discover and make your creativity come to life. For me being a graphics student for the second time around has changed me for the better. I have refined my skills to the point where there's still more to learn, but it is to the point where I can help teach others around me about what works in a design.

My teacher -- though we have had our differences on my designs -- always starts out every day with the positivity to get us through that day and the next. This being Ms. Gibbs’ third year as the teacher of this class, she has gone from someone that worked in the field for some odd years to a person that no matter who you are, you can be friends with her. She teaches anyone and everyone from any walk of life. She loves to teach than rather be in the field because she cares for her students just like they were her own kids.

I have to personally say that through this class I never would have thought I would make these amazingly creative works of art. To be a student in the graphics class is to be you in all your glory, whether you’re creative or not, you can create something worthwhile. Being a graphics student allows me to be creative for two and a half hours a day and to escape from the regular routine of going class to class for hours a day. It has helped me realize what I want to pursue in life, with the help of my teacher every day.

So, if there is anything to take away from this article, it should be that to be a graphics student is to be yourself. Just look at my experience in this class, it’s been fun and enjoyable, everyday.
