Construction Trades Builds Roofs for HBR Dugouts
It was the middle of November when the Construction Trades class made a trip to Hinckley-Big Rock High School to see the baseball field dugouts. The job was building roofs for both dugouts.
Before we went out to the site, the class did a material list and cost estimate for the school. The next steps in the project were to measure everything, make a triple beam, set up the top plates, and cut rafters. Once those steps were done, we installed the rafters and put up the fascia. After a couple pieces of fascia were on, we started to layout the OSB and felt paper to start shingling. Shingling took the longest, but after that was done, all that was left was the aluminum fascia. With the project almost finished, the transformation turned out very well.
Despite a few setbacks and mistakes, both of the classes performed well throughout the duration of the project. The whole project was a good learning experience for all of the students, as they learned how to apply certain techniques and what would be expected on a job site. I personally enjoyed the project, as my skills improved and I learned new techniques. During the work, we were supervised and rated on our safety practices and how we could improve upon them. Overall, I believe that the project was a success and a great learning experience for everyone.
