Illinois Vehicle Code Helps Students Know the Law
The law enforcement program has many modules that they study. This last week, they have been reading the Illinois Vehicle Code. Though this is not a component of any criminal justice degree or program, it is a vital part of a police officer’s knowledge. Building on the concept of PROBABLE CAUSE in by which police officers can make arrests and question suspects, they must know laws to be able to ascertain when drivers are violating them.
Once a driver is in violation, they are subject to the discretion of an officer to receive a citation, warning, or proceed with some sort of other investigation. This can open doors to discovering crimes and/or arresting offenders such as Timothy McVeigh who was stopped for a traffic infraction and then was arrested for the Oklahoma Bombing.
Besides needing this info for a police career, students will be driving and they should know the laws so they can be lawful when they drive.
