Students Work with Certified Athletic Trainers at Local High Schools
Sports Med 19-20 is off to a great start! While first year students are busy learning the basics of anatomy, second year students are gaining real-world work experience with two area high schools. Sports Medicine II students have a unique opportunity to work alongside Certified Athletic Trainers at Sandwich and Newark High Schools during fall sports game coverage. This experience gives them a close up view of what an Athletic Trainer does. Here’s what second year students have to say about the experience:
Blake B., SHS Senior -
“I came back to Sports Med because I wanted to learn different taping methods, how Athletic Trainers prevent injuries and what to do when someone gets injured during a game. During my internship, I work with the Athletic Trainers at Sandwich and Newark High Schools, covering a variety of sports like football, volleyball, and soccer. I’ve seen many injuries in different sports settings and how they are treated.”
Davan P., SHS Senior -
“During my second year, I get to apply the material and skills I’ve learned in class to real life experiences. For example, I’m able to use my taping skills to tape ankles before volleyball games for the players. This experience also allows me to exchange intern hours for class hours. This allows us to get the best look into real-world Athletic Training.”
Julian M., PHS Senior -
“My first year at IVVC made a big impact on my decision for a career. It helped me figure out that I wanted to be an Athletic Trainer. So I came back to get the experience from internships that are available to me. The internships are exciting. There are different paths in this field, and this experience helps me see which one is best for me.”
Mackenzie A., SHS Senior -
“When I intern I am able to do more hands-on learning and really see how it would be working a certain job every day. I like interning because I’m able to weigh my options and cancel out anything that does not interest me. It helps me focus on making choices for after graduation.”
John K., SHS Senior -
“I came to IVVC not exactly knowing what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to do something sports-related. I chose Sports Medicine class. The first year was great! I learned how to tape, treat injuries, and identify the parts of the body. This made me want to come back and explore my career options. I want to become an Athletic Trainer. I am working with the Sandwich and Newark HS Athletic Trainers right now. I get to see first-hand what an AT does and see how acute injuries are treated in a game situation.”
Jaylynn V., SHS Senior -
“Second year students get to experience the wide variety of jobs in the Sports Medicine field, observe jobs that interest us, and potentially find a career to pursue in college. I have shadowed the Sandwich and Newark HS Athletic Trainers. The work is very similar, but the different ways they each go about a situation or even taping injuries is fascinating. Next semester, I hope to gain experience at a chiropractor, massage therapy, and possibly an occupational therapy job setting too.”
