Two-Way Radio Skills a Lifeline for First Responders
This month in Law Enforcement (LE), the students have jumped into using two-way radios, the lifeline for first responders. With a generous donation from the Kane County Sheriff and the Elburn Police Department, the LE class has enough radios to equip all the students at the same time. With the help of Andrew Bauman, the “radio-man” for KaneComm (the dispatching center for Kane County), all of the radios broadcast on the same channel with a few channels to use as extras.
The students have learned the basics of communicating on the radio as well as training using zone identifiers. The students also know to respond to the dispatcher in order to check people through the computer. To make it even more lifelike, each of the role playing “bad guys” have identifications that mimic Illinois Driver’s Licenses to get the student acclimated to reading them.
