Finding Joy and Curiosity in Graphic Design Projects

Graphic Design: a home to some of the most creative kids IVVC has to offer. Although the class seems exciting and new to our first-year students, the game has completely changed for our second-year seniors. It’s a shame a lot of the fun activities shared between the second-year kids can never be fully understood with this year’s first-time students. The field trip last year to the 2019 Print Expo at McCormick Place in Chicago was a unique experience, because not only did students find a day of exploration into the graphic design world, they experienced it with their AM/PM counterparts. This year, we’re lucky enough to see only a quarter of our intended class.
But despite that, the first-year students still have enough energy and positivity to bring light into the classroom. It’s as if nothing has changed, and hopefully when the following year comes back around, they’ll still hold that same creative fire they had when they first joined, sharing it with next year’s IVVC class of 2021-2022. It’s truly heartwarming to see that even amidst a pandemic, we creatives can still find ways to express ourselves through design.
Finding ways to make the class entertaining doesn’t seem to be a struggle either. Despite the new seating placements, sanitation requirements, social distancing and mask wearing, this year’s students find joy and curiosity in almost every project assigned to them. The joy isn’t found in menial things like close proximity, it never was. It was finding a creative outlet through the use of the multiple programs Graphic Design had to offer and connecting with those who share similar interests.
Though the changes at IVVC have been drastic this year - really schooling in general - students here seem to be as lively as ever.
