Construction Trades Learns By Building a Shed
The first major project for our Construction Trades class was an 8 foot by 12 foot shed. We built this shed in the shop, and it was later tailored to the clients’ house. The shed had a garage door in the front, electrical outlets, lights, vinyl siding, and a hip roof.
For most of my classmates, and myself, we learned and experienced a lot of new things during the construction of this shed. We not only learned about many construction techniques, but we also learned about safety on a construction site. We even had an opportunity to achieve our OSHA 10 Certification.
While building this shed, I did a lot of things for the first time. Previously, I had never done any framing, roofing, siding, installed windows, or pretty much anything else we had done on this project. This gave me a chance to experience many different tasks for the first time.
I also learned what type of tasks I like doing. For example, I enjoyed framing and roofing the shed. Some benefits to doing a project like this is that we had the opportunity to try almost anything we wanted. I could help frame the shed, help with the electrical, help roof, and the list goes on. Working on a project where you get a chance to work on a vast number of things helps with finding a future career and interests. Some of my other classmates also appreciated the varying tasks we had the opportunity to do.
Overall, this project was a great learning experience because I did many things for the first time, as well as it opened my eyes to some of my interests and possible future career choices.
