From Drywall, To Dream Team
In the first semester, I was asked to drywall a framed wall, along with one other person. This was a very important thing for me, because I was given a special opportunity to prove my worth aside from the team. This was a real test for my skill, speaking that mudding and taping are very difficult tasks, and I personally felt very accomplished in my work, as well as my partners and it was a good one-on-one experience with some of my classmates. I think that small tasks like this are a great way to prove how reliable and trustworthy someone is. Mr. Hoskins, the Construction Trades Instructor, put trust in me to get the job done, and I did my job, and sometimes that's all it takes.
I personally was not amazing at construction nor was I very knowledgeable either. I really took the project as a learning experience. This project brought me closer to some of my classmates and you create a strong bond with your team when you have the sense of ¨we really made this¨. I love that feeling.
You benefit so much from these types of projects. There were so many times where my teammate and I saw we had to pick up some slack for others, and we embraced that, and I feel that got us where we are today. You benefit so much from these experiences, not only do you get knowledge of how to do something, but then you can take it into your own hands and really feel that sense of accomplishment. You could see it in some of my teammates’ eyes too, that sense of passion, and I don't think of them as classmates, we are so much more than that.
I feel like as a whole, IVVC isn't just here to teach us skills, it's here to bring people together. I really think that without IVVC, neither me, nor my teammates, would have grown to where we are today.
