Knowledge of IVC Debunks Myths
Students in the IVVC Law Enforcement class studied the Illinois Vehicle Code (IVC). For two weeks, the students go through the vehicle code.
Though there are almost 500 pages, the class only concentrates on chapters 3, 6, 11, and 12. Chapter 3 covers registration and titles. Students learn about keeping their vehicles legal to drive on the road. Chapter 6 covers the licensing laws letting students learn about what can suspend a license and how to get it reinstated. Chapter 11 covers all of the rules of the road from speeding to DUI to how to properly turn. Chapter 12 covers all the equipment that must be present on a vehicle.
Having the students learn the rules makes them better drivers and debunks some of the myths that students have heard.
Once the lesson is over, the students take a timed 100 question exam (open book/notes). After the students successfully pass that, we proceed to how to make traffic stops. The students also learn how to write tickets to offenders.
An officer from the Secretary of State visits sometime during those two weeks to discuss fake IDs and does a ‘question and answer’ about the IVC.
This all leads to scenarios when the students conduct traffic stops once the weather breaks.
