Students Train Like Law Enforcement Professionals

Coming back to IVVC’s Law Enforcement class has been the highlight of my year! It might be a high school course, but it is far from your ordinary high school. Being in this class is a privilege that gives students opportunities that will set them up for the rest of their lives. Here in Law Enforcement we don’t just sit around listening to lectures and answering questions. We engage in the law enforcement community and get the opportunity to train like law enforcement professionals. We get tons of fun opportunities like learning defensive tactics, airsoft, and practicing our skills with organizations including the Army National Guard. We also hear from organizations most people would dream of talking to, like the DEA or FBI!

Unlike most high school classes, we don’t do much bookwork! We spend most of our days up out of our chairs. Whether it's in our lab practicing airsoft scenarios, outside performing traffic stops, or down in EMS learning medical skills; we are constantly moving and having fun.

Even though it is still the beginning of the year we have already had many unforgettable opportunities. Our 2nd years have had the chance to learn about public information officers, and got to learn from a professional photographer on how to take high definition photos. Meanwhile our 1st years have been building their knowledge on law enforcement by learning all the cop “lingo” and history of law enforcement.

As a whole class we like to get outside a lot. We have spent a few days working on our cardio in a nearby nature trail, which gets everyone out of the classroom and gets our energy out. Overall in Law Enforcement we make sure everyone is having fun and is using their hands-on skills instead of just sitting around all day.

Even though we do like to get moving a lot, this is still a high school. Don’t let the idea of lectures scare you off though. Lectures with Chief Kerry are hardly lectures at all. During lectures the class spends most of their time making jokes or asking hypothetical questions, which definitely makes the lectures easier to bear. So even when we do bookwork, everyone still has fun!

Overall, IVVC’s Law Enforcement class is the best class I’ve ever taken that has taught me things that I will take into the rest of my life. This class is a fresh breath from ordinary high school life and allows students to have fun while also learning.
