Construction Trades - Finishing One House While Starting Another
The Indian Valley Vocational Center's Construction Trades program is putting the final touches on the house they started to build last year. The tasks students have been working on finishing include:
- Installing kitchen cabinets
- Flooring
- Installing and painting trim/doors
- Finish electrical
While finishing last year's house, the class also began the framing process on the next house. So far the students have been able to see professionals excavate the site, set up and pour the foundation, and install the structural steel. The students are currently installing the floor framing system.
Both sites are located in Dutch Acres subdivision in Sandwich, right down the road from IVVC. Last year's house build was a challenge for students framing the roof in the heart of January. This year, with two instructors and seventy plus students, the class is getting more of a head start and cranking out the framing in an attempt at enclosing the house before the worst of the winter weather hits. The Construction Trades program offers students both valuable skills in the trade and the experience of working in a real-world working situation.
